Māori and Pasifika Komiti project

Good careers build strong families and vibrant communities

Our commitment to the government’s Tertiary Education Strategy and Educational Performance Indicators ensures a focus on attaining parity of participation across all our 37 sectors for Māori and Pasifika learners. With engineering and related trades, in particular, seeing lower participation rates by Māori and Pasifika, we undertook a research review to understand how Competenz can best support these groups into our trades.

Our Māori and Pasifika Komiti embraced the review’s recommendation to show role models from these groups doing mahi (work) in our industries, with relatable communications material designed for the needs of this audience, showcasing success stories.

The Competenz ‘Make it Trades’ brochure showcases the work and home lives of four of our Māori and Pasifika learners in the engineering and forestry industries. This guide is distributed throughout New Zealand schools and communities, to introduce how Competenz works with Māori and Pasifika to create pathways for successful careers.
